Good morning, Readers!
It feels like it's been a long while since I wrote a post. But that's not true. I wrote one last week. It just feels like forever ago because I was at Ottawa ComicCon this weekend. Which... seeing as how I was there and met a bunch of new people, I suppose I ought to re-introduce myself to the world, in case (and I flatter myself) anyone I met this weekend pops by my blog to check my stuff out.
Hi. Hello. Hey.
My name is Sonia. I write under S.M. Carrière. Most of what I write is fiction. Fiction of all kinds; historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy fiction... And this blog, which is not fiction. Mostly. In fact, I'm a bit late publishing this post, as it was ComicCon this weekend and I am the worst kind of introvert. I spent all of yesterday, when this post was supposed to go up, asleep in bed recovering from the weekend. It's not that I don't enjoy these things, it's just that it takes a lot out of me.
Anyway, fiction. yes. I have a few books out. You can see them here.
I took couple of years off writing during the pandemic because a lot of things happened very quickly, and being practically allergic to change, it kinda threw me around a bit. I needed time to find my feet again. I'm still in that process, but I have finally found my way back to writing. It was still a big blow to whatever momentum I had created. Previously I had published a book a year. Now, there won't be a new physical book in my, or your, hands until 2026.
I currently work full time in an office that isn't mine, and as a result I'm a little slow in getting my books completed lately. I'm currently working on the third book and final book of a portal fantasy series that takes place in three different worlds. I'm currently pitching it as a dark Chronicles of Narnia with laser guns. I should have finished that book several months ago, but I have been unable to find the time necessary to write.
Oh well. One day soon.
Once it's all done, I can go about shopping the first book in the series. I wanted to ensure the series was written before shopping the first book, largely to assuage those very valid fears of readers when buying the first book of a series - that the series will never get finished. That's not something I want people to have to deal with from me. So, once the rough draft is complete, I'll be submitting the first. Fingers crossed the publishing gods smile kindly upon it.
I do have a novel in the works with my current publisher. It is written and has been accepted. It will be, hopefully, available in early 2026. The Lioness of Shara Mountain is my love letter to friendship, in a fantastic setting where a warrior priestess from a distant western island is brought by chance or fate to a small principality in the eastern reaches of the continent, where she forms an intense, though platonic, bond with their prince and becomes instrumental in their defence. I love it so much, and I can't wait to share it with you. Watch this space for news about it.
I'm also currently publishing a weekly serial - The New Haven Incident - for free right on this blog. It goes up every Friday. It's basically a zombie story, if instead of zombies, we get hyper-aggressive fairies. It's the silliest premise ever, but the characters are so earnest despite the silliness, and I had a lot of fun writing it. I hope you have a lot of fun reading it. You can start here, if you're interested.
I do have a Ko-Fi, where, for a dollar (Canadian) a month, you get free recipes, extra blog posts, access to special editions of my books, and, until it's complete, entire chapters of my serial instead of the half-chapters that go up on my blog. My Ko-Fi supporters are well ahead of my blog readers when it comes to the story. For them, they'll get the last word in October of this year. It will be October of next year for everyone else.
The Ko-Fi is relatively new. Okay, it's not that new, but I have been quite short on time, so I'm a little late getting it all sorted. There's not an awful lot on there right now, but I'll get there. It's slow going until I earn enough from my writing to support myself with it. Then I can pour much more time and energy into it.
In non-writing things, almost every Friday evening, I live stream my attempts at playing video games. I like to play narrative games (the ones with stories, because stories is what I do), and have had a lot of fun hanging out online with folks while I play. I'm currently running around Britain in Assassin's Creed Valhalla and having a blast. Join me! 7pm (usually) on Twitch.
AND because I don't have enough on my plate, I also train and teach martial arts. I train with Wutan Canada, and teach women's only classes on Saturday mornings. It's so much fun, and I really enjoy it. I'm currently injured, so I'm taking the first week of the new semester off training (will still be teaching, however), but I'll be there with bells on next week. Hopefully. Stupid foot.
So... yeah. That's more or less what I do and where I am right now. Thank you so much for dropping by and checking stuff out. I hope you'll stick around. I have to go and do my work now. I'll let you go.
Slán go foill!
